Bad Day, Or Time to Move On?

17 February 2010

In speaking with physicians about their careers, they often express feelings of burn-out, stress, and even dissatisfaction with their practice altogether.   Although we speak with physicians in a variety of career stages and motivation levels, our job as recruiters tends to put us in touch with physicians who are feeling restless, or looking for greener pastures.

Often, before discussing an opportunity with a physician, I prefer to get to know who they are, what motivates them, and how they got to where they are today.  I like to ask physicians why they entered the field of medicine in the first place, so I can get a better understanding of what inspired them to become a physician originally.  Sometimes this helps put their frustrations in perspective, and helps the physician determine if they are truly motivated enough to make a move, or if he or she is simply having a bad day.

Sometimes, you can determine how serious your motivation is, or is not, by focusing on the positive and remembering the patients you impact each day, the lives you improve, and the care that you provide to so many people can help you to get through a rough day – whether it’s a tough surgery, a less-than-desirable outcome, or just a bad hair day that’s got you down.

Today I read a great story from DrGreene.com about an interesting day in his life as a pediatrician.  His day started out all wrong, but turned out to be a memorable day in his career, thanks to a very special patient.  I found his story very touching, and thought it might bring a smile to your heart, and perhaps even help you remember what you love about medicine and your current practice.   However, if after reading this, you still can’t remember what you love about your current practice, then maybe you do need to give us a call, after all!
