Healthcare Industry News: Reform Update, August Jobs Report, and More

3 September 2010

Each week brings many new developments in the healthcare industry. Here are a few of the top stories from this week, which most impact physicians, medical practice, and physician staffing.

OSHA is still working diligently towards increasing regulation of resident work hours, and decreasing the number of consecutive hours allowed, according to FierceHealthcare. The organization is planning to issue a petition on the matter in the near future.

On the health reform front, the multiple polls are showing that public support of the PPACA is declining, even in light of recent media campaigns on behalf of the White House, including an article published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The article outlined ten ways health reform will change medical practice, including an increase in hospital employment of physicians.

If you are an emergency physician, future EM physician, or someone responsible for recruiting or staffing an emergency department, you may be interested in a recent study covered in American Medical News.  The report showed that emergency room patients expect to see a physician, not a mid-level, even for very minor visits. Furthermore, the patients are even willing to wait longer to avoid seeing someone other than an MD/DO.

Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released the jobs report for August, and once again the news was good for the healthcare industry, but not so great for the overall unemployment picture. Both hospital jobs and ambulatory jobs increased in August.

On this Friday before a holiday weekend, The Medicus Firm staff wishes everyone a safe and fun time on this last official holiday of the summer!
