Medical School Applicants Increase to Record Levels
24 October 2011The American Association of Medical Colleges released some big news today – that the number of first-time med school applicants reached a record high, increasing in total by 2.6 percent.
Below are some additional highlights:
- Total applicants increased 2.8 percent to 43,919
- First-time applicants were up 2.6 percent, to 32,654
- Nearly all major racial and ethnic groups showed comparable increases
- The average GPA of all applicants was 3.5, and the average MCAT score was 29.
- 82.5% of all applicants reported pre-medical community service in a clinical or medical environment.
- 68.4% reported nonclinical service
- 73% reported research experience
- Total medical school enrollment increased by 3% over last year, with 19,230 students in the 2011 class.
The AAMC also reports that medical schools are gradually increasing class sizes to help accommodate more students to help offset the impending physician shortage projected by the AAMC and other healthcare associations.
