Why Healthcare Employers Must Be a “Best Place to Work”

At a time when more than 80% of healthcare professionals are either actively looking, or are at least open to considering new employment opportunities, an attractive work environment is more important than ever for employers.

Do people enjoy working at your company, practice, or hospital? Even if you haven’t been officially designated as a “Best Place to Work,” or won an award praising your work environment, you may still be a “best” (or “worst”) place to work, based on your reputation among healthcare professionals.

Being a great place to work obviously impacts your bottom line in several ways, including major factors such as lower turnover and higher performance.

Even if you know you have low turnover and satisfied employees, do you know what keeps them there? What is it about your work environment that makes your employees so content? You need to know, so you can maintain the conducive work environment you’ve successfully achieved.

If you don’t have a great work environment, you need to find out why, and fix it.

How do you know what employees like about working with you and for you?

Ask them.

Sound simple? It is.

I was recently tasked with a project that required me to write about our company and it’s a great place to work – it’s part of a contest for those companies named on Modern Healthcare’s “Best Places to Work in Healthcare.”

I sent an email out to all employees of The Medicus Firm and asked one question: What do you like most about working at The Medicus Firm?

Not only did people send more replies than they have to any previous requests for information, the responses were completely overwhelming and enlightening as to how much people really love their jobs at The Medicus Firm. Quite frankly, I’ve never worked at a company where people feel this way about their employer. It definitely helped to make the writing assignment much easier, even though I was limited to 200 rhyming words.

What do your employees love about you as an employer? If they can’t tell you when asked, you may have a serious problem to address as soon as possible!
